Charter Schools: What are they?
Charter Schools Defined
Charter schools are public schools that
operate under the authority of the district, county
or state.
Los Angeles Leadership Academy's Charter
Status
The LA Leadership Academy received its
charter in February 2002 from the Los Angeles Unified
School District.
As an independent charter, the school
receives its funding directly from the state, designs
its own curriculum to meet the state content standards,
and makes autonomous hiring and governance decisions.
The charter is valid for five years. The school must
prove that it is meeting the commitments outlined in
its charter to receive its next five-year renewal.
